[THRILLIST] DETROIT CHEFS RANK THE BEST DETROIT-STYLE DEEP DISH PIZZA

Buddy's Rendezvous. Photo by Nicole Rupersburg.

It's almost as contentious a question as, "which is better, Lafayette or American?" -- who makes the best Detroit-style deep dish pizza? Now, as we all know, not all deep dish pizzas are created equal. (We're looking at you, Chicago. Your deep dish is terrible and everyone knows it. Even Jon Stewart!). We might be just a BIT biased, but screw it -- the best deep dish comes from Detroit!

But naming Detroit's best deep dish isn’t a task to take lightly. To determine the best deep dish pizza in (metro) Detroit, we took it to our panel of experts, asking some of the area's top chefs (and one current Top Chef) to weigh in on their favorites. We asked them to give us up to five favorites. Top picks received 5pts, second choices 4, and so on. Here's what happened:

The Week We Ate (The EID Week in Review)

Coming in April!

ICYMI:
~This week's Young Gun is Brennan Calnin of Imperial. He has worked for Takashi and loves butter, liver, champagne, and pirates. Read his thoughts on Michigan's culinary scene and his lifelong call to the kitchen here. [EID]
~This week's Green Grocer series for Model D took me to Detroit's west side, where supermarkets are going through extensive remodels and adding energy-efficient equipment along with fresh food and low prices. [Model D]
~Here's your November news from the outer 'burbs: Great Lakes Culinary Center is now open, Buddy's Pizza has opened its first new location in 15 years in the Novi of the northeast, Troy is getting another "places for area office workers to go for a fast take-out lunch" place, and Smoke Street looks like it will be…serviceable. [EID]
~Did you miss the full episode of America's Best Bites on the Cooking Channel earlier this year when they featured Chef James Rigato of The Root Restaurant and Bar in White Lake? Fret not; the whole thing is now available to watch in four segments on YouTube and here they are. [EID]
~Speaking of James Rigato on TV, did you catch last night's episode of On the Rocks on the Food Network featuring Chef James of The Root? In this episode the team hit up The Oxford Inn of Royal Oak and re-vamped their back bar and private dining room into Lock + Key, a "speakeasy"-style bar with classic cocktails, all Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. beers on draft, and a small plates menu that Rigato helped design. The space has comfortable leather seating, its own patio for the warm months, and a cozy fireplace. Here's some photos I took there a few months ago; take a look! [EID Flickr]
~The Pursuit of Pappy: updated. [EID]
~Update: Bagger Dave's in Greektown is now open. [EID]
~EVENTS! [EID]

Are these the best (erp, "coolest") restaurants in (metro) Detroit? Well? (EID's answer: if this list was from 2010, yes.) [Thrillist]

Metro Times Detroit has been running this great series of old-school Detroit restaurant recipes, a "treasure trove" found in a Hamtramck attic (one must wonder just how many Hamtramck attics hold such treasure troves...probably most of them). Very cool stuff here from Schweizer’s Restaurant, the original Joe Muer Seafood, and the recently shuttered Caucus Club. [Metro Times]

One Starbucks closes and another opens...just a few years ago one street-level downtown Starbucks closed, only for a new location to open just blocks away. The coffee-consuming market has changed drastically since 2009, with a whole lot more independent coffee houses all throughout the city and a whole lot more people (in the CBD especially) to spend money at them. Here's a great look at how the market has evolved in that time (though it should also be noted that there is another Starbucks that just opened downtown inside the Crowne Plaza, which realistically will really only ever serve hotel guests, but still. It's there.) [Detroit News]

New bar in Eastern Market-ish area, Thomas Magee's Sporting House Whiskey Bar. [TMSHWB FB]

The Atlantic Cities caught wind of the fight to save Hamtown Farms. Also read more about Hamtown Farms founder Michael Davis here. [Atlantic Cities / UIX]

The Great Lakes Culinary Center in Southfield officially opened. It is a 20,000 square foot culinary center with a huge commercial test kitchen and indoor/outdoor event space that can be rented out for events as well as for aspiring food entrepreneurs that need access to a commercial kitchen in order to make and sell their products. It will also be used for cooking classes and demonstrations. Here's more details. [D Business / FB 101]

Royal Oak could potentially lose a bookstore in favor of gaining another bar. Which just speaks volumes. [Royal Oak Patch]

Wicked Donuts has officially launched inside Treat Dreams. [TD FB]

In the ongoing Matt Prentice Restaurant Group saga (once upon a time he owned a bunch of restaurants and was one of the area's top restaurant groups), a huge lawsuit was awarded against him by his former business partner. And that appears to be the end of that, as they say. [Crain's]

Crain's Detroit Business looks at La Feria Detroit by the numbers with a bit of musing on the growing culinary competition in the city. "At one point in time, not too long ago, it was good enough just to be open in Detroit." I feel like we're not *quite* past that point yet, but eventually there will come a point when we're not all Detroit-obligated to like everything that opens. (That's not to say anything bad of La Feria, just my own musing.) Also, h/t to Ben at Detroit Institute of Bagels for introducing me to the phrase "Detroit-obligated," which I am going to use excessively from now on. [Crain's]

The Root Restaurant and Bar will no longer be moving forward with plans to open a second location in Howell. This isn't a reflection on their business or lack of desire to expand; owner Ed Mamou has recently had some significant growth opportunities with his recycling business and is focusing his time and energy on that. Chef James Rigato, in the meantime, will continue to make the Root his focus with more Young Guns and other theme dinners, cooking classes, and work with nonprofits. [Livingston Daily]

Bigalora Ann Arbor opens today! For those keeping score, this is Ann Arbor's bajillionth pizzeria, but one of very few in this elevated Neapolitan style (MANI Osteria + Bar being the only real comparison). [Freep]

The Oakland gets a shout-out from Liquor.com for their selection of rare spirits. [Liquor.com]

What's it like for someone from LA to move to Detroit? Shinola's Daniel Caudill shares some of this favorite spots in his new home city with Sight Unseen. Eastern Market Corporation, art, architecture, the whole nine. [Sight Unseen]

After a fire shut down the popular JBaldwins Restaurant-Catering in Clinton Twp. earlier this year, renovation work is moving along steadily and the restaurant will be even better than it was before once it's all done. Check out some renderings here. [J Baldwins Official]

Detroit SOUP's efforts at expanding into neighborhoods gets some coverage in the Detroit News. [Detroit News]

And Ann Arbor SOUP is now also a thing. [A2 SOUP]

MenuTest.com, a local tech startup developed at Grand Circus in downtown Detroit, will help restaurants train and test their staff more efficiently. [Model D]

The Daily Meal reminds us that Traverse City is awesome. [The Daily Meal]

U MAD, CHICAGO? [The Daily Show]

Interesting look at not just foods but also food processes that are banned in the United States. One must also wonder why Massachusetts, New York, and New Mexico choose to specifically single out Flamin' Hot Cheetos and not their nuclear orange sibling, regular Cheetos. RAYCESS. [Thrillist]

Beerie
~Why is branded glassware in bars such a big deal? Crain's Detroit Business has the full report (and, as is the case regarding any kind of alcohol legislation in the state of Michigan, it's...complicated). [Crain's]

~First look: Bell's Brewery, Inc. (Official) Oberon and Two Hearted can designs - coming in April. Best Brown, Winter White, and Smitten to follow. [Bell's Official]

~Drink beer? There's an app for that! [Apppicker]

[NEWS BITES] November news from the outer 'burbs

Great Lakes Culinary Center.

Southfield: The new Great Lakes Culinary Center, a 20,000-square-foot, multi-use facility for restaurant and food service industry professionals and aspiring food entrepreneurs, has officially opened its doors to the public. The center is connected with the Great Lakes Supply Company and provides food service professionals with everything needed to design, build, test, and launch a fully-equipped commercial kitchen. In addition, it is an interactive demonstration classroom, multimedia learning center, and a destination for private parties and special events with indoor/outdoor seating and capacity of up to 150 people.

Milford: Despite a previous press release going on saying that it is open, the new Smoke Street in Milford (in the space previously occupied by Cinco Lagos, previously Five Lakes Grille) is in fact not yet open. But the menu is up, and it looks...like it will be less "destination" BBQ and more serviceable neighborhood "we go because it's there" BBQ.

Plymouth: Plymouth-Canton Patch reports that the 789 building is celebrating its grand opening. The building is home to three new businesses: Cafe Jorge, Aladdin Shawarma Express, and Yummie Yogurt.

Shelby Township: Buddy's Pizza opened their 10th metro Detroit area location in Shelby Township yesterday. "Where is Shelby Township?", you ask? If you have to ask, you don't really need to know. (It's basically the Novi of the northeast but without all the Asians.) This is Buddy's first new location in 15 years.

Troy: Columbus's Piada Italian Street Food is coming to Troy. Here's part of the press release:A new, healthy, made-to-order food concept is coming Michigan thanks to successful Ohio restaurateur Chris Doody. Piada Italian Street Food will premiere its thin crust bread that is hand-rolled with premium ingredients at its newest location on Friday, Nov. 22 at 2038 W. Big Beaver Road in Troy.

Piada Troy is a new genre of fresh fare with Northern Italian roots. It is quickly rising in popularity in the Midwest and hailed as a “Hot Concept” by Nation’s Restaurant News. At the counter of Piada Troy, guests choose the creation of their dish step-by-step. The price of the average meal is $9 and the order is typically completed within 60 seconds.

Guests choose from three entrees:
· The Piada – It begins with a stone-baked Italian crust dough made from organic and natural flours and extra virgin olive oil. Then, it is filled with high-quality ingredients and from-scratch sauces of the guests’ choice
· A custom-created chopped salad
· A personal pasta bowl

Guests customize their entrée selections with items such as steak, Italian sausage or salmon; sauces including Pomodoro, Alfredo and pesto; a selection of sautéed and fresh vegetables; and salad toppings of cheese, pancetta and much more.

So, basically, it's another place for Troy office workers to get a quick lunch.

[Real Detroit] The Dish

Why not just call it "Meaddale"? Ferndale's B. Nektar Meadery recently expanded into a second production facility with a tasting room and Schramm's Mead – owned by world-renowned mead-man Ken Schramm – is set to open later this spring. In the meantime, get your mead fix at B. Nektar's first-ever Spring Mead Fest on Saturday, 4/20 at 1505 Jarvis from noon to 6 p.m. There will be food from Treat Dreams, Green Zebra, Detroit BBQ Co. and Dee's Hot Dog Stand. Limited-release meads will be on draft and they'll also release their new bourbon barrel-aged mead, Episode 13 – B. Nektar Strikes Back.

[Metromode] Going Veggie in Metro Detroit

You don't have to be a vegetarian to enjoy these vegetarian-friendly restaurants. Whether you're looking towards a more herbivore diet for health reasons or you just want to enjoy something light for lunch or dinner, these (not always obvious) places located throughout metro Detroit have something on the menu just for you. And for you meatatarians out there, your love of bacon is no less pure and true if you occasionally mix in some garbanzo beans and greens once in awhile.

[Real Detroit] Buddy's Restaurant + Pizzeria

Buddy's Restaurant + Pizzeria is Detroit's original original. This is where "Detroit-style deep dish" was born over 65 years ago, and it is Detroit's most famous pizza. How famous is Buddy's famous pizza? Well, it's been covered by the New York Times and New York Post and Food Network and Food + Wine and GQ and Oprah Magazine and Parade Magazine and Zagat. That famous.

If you don't know what Detroit-style deep dish is, you must be new here. It is those dense square pizzas with the crispy edges where the cheese bubbles over and fuses to the sides. It is a heavy, industrial-grade pizza that perfectly suits our industrial-sized Detroit appetites. It is the pizza of the people – not the fancy, dainty pizzas with toppings that had to clear customs, but simple, hearty pizza for the working man. Buddy's Pizza is Detroit. Detroit is Buddy's Pizza.

The Way We Were Week We Ate (The EID Week in Review)

It is National Pizza Month, the Second-Annual American Cheese Month, and also the month of cider mills (and ciders!) and Halloween and Fall Beer Fest. Obviously October is the best month ever. [EID FB / Ferndale Patch / Hour Detroit / TB FB / MT FB]

Is it any coincidence that Food + Wine published their list of the best pizza places in the U.S. during National Pizza Month? No it is not. Predictably the coasts dominate, but there are three (three!) from southeastern Michigan that made the list -- Supino Pizzeria + Buddy's in Detroit and Mani Osteria in Ann Arbor. [F+W]

The Caucus Club says Enough is Enough and will close later this month after Detroit Restaurant Week wraps. The Caucus was one of the last-standing dining institutions of Old Detroit. So much for The Way We Were, but owner Mary Belloni believes that it will only be a matter of time before Happy Days Are Here Again. [Detroit News]

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital has opened an organic greenhouse and hired a resident farmer with 16 years experience thanks to an anonymous $1million donation. The facility will be used to further Henry Ford's mission of promoting wellness through food in addition to care and will also have an education center. [Prosper]

Aw, a young Chef Paul Grosz! [Fat Bob's Kitchen / Cuisine FB]

You know, for awhile I thought we were getting away from that whole "steak and potatoes" Midwestern thing. We weren't. Here are a bunch of new steakhouses in metro Detroit (Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse, Prime29 Steakhouse, Detroit Prime, more), which is to say nothing of all the old ones. (Or new ones they missed, like the London Chop House.) [MMX]

There is a certain contingency that rolls their eyes now at every "urban agriculture in Detroit" story (surprisingly, I'm not among them), but it really is one of the most fascinating and unique things currently happening in this city. Here's a great story on Detroit's Food Field. [MLive]

More rabble rabble rabble rabble rabble over food trucks. [Freep]

GQ Magazine names Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. one of the 12 best bars for beer lovers in the country, uses spectacularly awful photo to demonstrate. [GQ]

The Sugar House is celebrating their one-year anniversary. All of Detroit will be there. [Sugar House FB]

8 Degrees Plato also celebrated one year in business. Probably not all of Detroit was there (the invisible barrier of 8 Mile and all), but maybe a respectable amount of Ferndale? [EID FB / 8 Degrees FB / Brew Jus FB]

More word on the Mina/Puck MGM changeover: Bourbon Steak closes its doors after service on Sunday, Oct. 7 and will immediately begin remodeling. Also starting Monday, Saltwater will be open seven days a week until further notice. No timeline yet available on when Saltwater will close for remodeling. [EID FB]

Santorini Estiatorio (Greek-named restaurant in Greektown) appears to be coming along nicely. [EID FB]

The inaugural DLECTRICITY event already has the potential to be one of Detroit's signature annual festivals and could quite possibly become a cultural lynchpin, Detroit's world-renowned answer to ArtPrize. At first I thought the name was silly, but it has grown on me. [Detroit News]
