[THRILLIST] 11 NEW DETROIT RESTAURANTS YOU NEED TO CHECK OUT RIGHT NOW

The Zenith. Photo by Nicole Rupersburg.

Summer is in the rear view, and it's time to start packing on the protective layers of blubber that'll allow you to survive another harsh Michigan winter. Luckily, Detroit's been blessed with plenty of exciting new establishments ready and waiting to feed you (and serve you drinks!), as Detroiters cannot survive on Vernors alone.

The Week We Ate (The EID Week in Review)

ICYMI:
~Detroit Restaurant Week has announced the lineup for the fall edition happening next month; new this year is a DRW series of the popular pop-up Guns + Butter being held at Shinola Store Detroit, but the reservations won't come easy. [EID / Crain's]
~No reservations? (And I'm not talking about the Bourdain show here, but he was indeed at Guns + Butter once IN CASE YOU FORGOT.) The first-ever #DineDrinkDetroit will happen October 7-13, featuring a combination of food and drink at 13 independently-owned Detroit restaurants for only $15, no reservations needed. It's kind of the un-DRW. [EID]

Dilla's Delights doughnut and coffee shop will open in Harmonie Park this fall in honor of the late Detroit producer J Dilla. There is a rap crossover joke in here. Also one about rappers making money long after death. Did 2Pac like tacos? I would really like to see 2 Pacos Tacos also happen. [Detroit News]

Dally in the Alley is happening next weekend. [Dally FB]

Check out the Batata Shop at Germack Coffee during Eastern Market Tuesdays through October. [TBS FB]

Kate Daughdrill - artist and farmer who was one of the founders of Detroit SOUP and more recently of The Edible Hut in Detroit's Osborn neighborhood - is also behind Burnside Farm in "Banglatown," a place where art and agriculture intersect. [UIX]

The new Firebird Tavern is a gorgeous space with good high-quality bar food (check out the menu and the dill pickle wings) and very friendly staff. Located right in Greektown by Old Shillelagh, perfect for pre-/post-gaming. From the former owners of Pulse. [EID FB / DBusiness]

Zagat has once again named their "50 states, 50 sandwiches," choosing the pasty for Michigan. Now, Detroiters might instinctively think it should be corned beef, what with because of ALL of the corned beef, but that's more of a (metro)*Detroit* thing. For the state of Michigan as a whole, the pasty (which is so much more than just a sandwich - it is a full meal in a beautiful buttery crust easy to carry and eat and brilliant in its simplicity) makes more sense. Though it is perhaps more closely related to the pie than the sandwich. Maybe it is a sandwich pie? [Zagat]

Food + Wine names the coolest crowd-funded projects in the country. Among them is our own Drought. Check them out at Shinola Store Detroit! [F+W]

Tommy's Bar is another local bar that served as a blind pig during Prohibition (with archeological evidence to prove it). [Detroit News]

Get punchy at The Oakland or The Sugar House, or do it yourself at home with these recipes. [Detroit News]

Luxe Secondsies. (Now open in GP.) [Detroit News]

Is our collective self-esteem really so low that we need constant validation from poorly-written copy+paste "travel blogs"? Because here is another one. [Roam Right]

~Check out the new website for Detroit Beer Week; events and venue details coming soon! [DBW]

~MLive is now on the hunt for Michigan's best brewery. This should be interesting. [MLive]

~Batch won Hatch, and another pile of free money. Here's a story that dates back to their first pile of free money. [Real Detroit]

~Warren's Falling Down Beer Company is getting a much-needed facelift and ditching the old Big Boy booths. [FDBC FB]

~A freak accident rocked the craft beer world this week as fellow brewers mourn the loss of Matt Courtright, who got his start in professional brewing at Liberty Street Brewing Co here in Plymouth. [BeerPulse]

~To celebrate their launch in Michigan, The Bruery (i.e., one of my favorite not-Michigan breweries) is running an Instagram contest through Sept. 10. Click on the link for details and try to find some Russian stacking dolls. (Click on the link, it will make sense.) [The Bruery Official]

The Week We Ate (The EID Week in Review)

POP-UPS! We love them. Still. Here's a quick hit of what's popping next.
~Guns + Butter is happening again July 8-10. [G+B]
~The Detroit Three is hosting their first-ever event, "Umami in Corktown," at St. Cece's Pub this Tuesday. The 8pm seating is already sold out with only a few seats left for 6pm. This event is a benefit for Cooking Matters and the Chef and Child Foundation, and all future events will have a similar charity component. [The Detroit Three Official]
~The boys of Bailout Productions have two events coming up in the next couple of weeks. The first is this Friday at the newly-opened Shinola store in Midtown featuring a cocktail made with Shinola Cola and music from Haute to Death; the next is on Thursday, July 18 in English Village with food from Green Dot and Slows and music and hipsters and etc. [Bailout FB]
~Cook Lola Cook will be popping up Saturdays at Gusoline Alley featuring international street foods, starting with street foods of Asia. [Cook Lola Cook FB]
~Komodo Kitchen is back at Honi Honi, the Oakland's outdoor tiki bar, this Sunday, July 7. If you missed it, keep an eye out for more of these events while the weather holds out. [Komodo Kitchen FB]
~This is the last weekend for the Coffee and (___) June on Jefferson pop-up. (UPDATE: Just kidding! As of Monday Coffee and (___) announced they will be open for two more weeks!) So now I can ask: can I buy one of those tables? ...Seriously though. (Yeah, still seriously though.) [C+blank FB]

In case you missed it:
~July is Michigan Craft Beer Month. Here is a list of great Michigan summer beers that you can get pretty much anywhere. [EID]
~If you think this is just another retail store, you don't know shit from Shinola. (Also the new home of DROUGHT juice.) [Real Detroit]
~Happy National Fried Chicken Day! In honor of this, here's my Wings Hot List from last year. [EID]

The newly-launched hand-crafted Joseph Wesley Black Tea is the next evolution of Detroit artisan food products. Owner Joe Uhl says the project has been incubating for more than 20 years, and now it is available for you to try at Stella Good Coffee. [Joseph Wesley Black Tea Official]

First it was beer. Now it is spirits. But the next super-trendy craft alcohol product on the horizon is guaranteed to be mead, and Michigan is already leading the way well ahead of any other state. In this story in Imbibe Magazine, B. Nektar and Kuhnhenn Brewing Co. both get some play, as does local boy Ken Schramm, who is largely responsible for bringing mead out of the basement and into commercial viability with his Compleat Meadmaker, the launch of the Mazer Cup and National Mead Day (August 4!), and his very own Schramm's Mead (opening soon). [Imbibe]

A lot of non-commital language from DTE reps here. The bottom line is, DTE bought two buildings and are going to do something with them at some point which may or may not involve restaurants and/or markets and/or something similar, potentially. [Crain's]

The late-night weekend menu at Imperial started last weekend and it's na-cho ordinary late-night drunken bar food. [Thrillist]

As American as hot dogs and coney pie... this week Metro Times Detroit checks in with a few of metro Detroit's local bakers, including Dangerously Delicious Pies Baked in Detroit, Love's Custard Pie, Sister Pie, and Achatz Handmade Pie Co. These aren't the apple pies your Grandma used to make, but they'll still be welcome at any Fourth of July party. [Metro Times]

Imported from Detroit: Detroit deep dish pizza. Here's an overview of the history of this indigenous cuisine with pretty pretty pictures in Hour Detroit, including Buddy's Pizza, Cloverleaf Bar and Restaurant, Loui's Pizza, Shield's Pizza and more. Also with a handy infographic! [Hour]

Remember that Yelp teaser for Papa Joe's Bistro? Crain's checked it out and had this to say. I will also add that the wine tasting machine, called an enomatic system, is one of only a few in Michigan. Other restaurants have multi-bottle cruvinet systems which allow them to offer 100+ wines by the glass to customers while also keeping the wine fresh for much longer than bottles (Reserve Wine + Food in Grand Rapids has the biggest in Michigan), but there aren't a lot of self-serve enomatic system in the state. Surprised this hasn't caught on yet - maybe this is just the beginning? [Crain's]

This looks promising. [Revolver Hamtramck Official]

Timmy's Tacos have turned two. Don't know what that means? Then head to The Painted Lady Lounge in Hamtramck on a Wednesday night. [Metro Times]

A2-based myFab5 seeks to be the new Yelp. This TechTown company just won the first showcase for Detroit Technology Exchange, funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in partnership with Bizdom Detroit, TechTown and Invest Detroit. [Crain's]

Who's got one of the top 5 most luxurious airport terminals in the country? According to CNN, WE DO!!! McNamara (DTW's terminal for the Delta hub and international carriers) gets high marks for things like a spa, a pro golf simulator, the first Porsche design store in any airport worldwide, and a gourmet PB+J sandwich shop. [CNN]

Crain's checks in with the Detroit City Futbol League with shout-outs to MillKing It Productions, Slows To Go, Green Dot Stables and El Guapo. [Crain's]

Who is Randal Fogelman of Eastern Market Corporation and Detroit Spice Co. Spices and Hot Sauces? Read about him here. [Red Thread]

~Griffin Claw Brewing Company will open on July 18. It's gonna be pretty cool, you guys. [Detroit News]

~If you've spent any time in A2 at ALL, you've witnessed the wonder that is the Violin Monster. Well, this fall, the fine folks at Arbor Brewing Company are making him his own beer. (Note: it will *not* be brewed with yeast extracted from his beard-mane.) [AnnArbor.com]

~Once upon a time I was on a SW MI beer bus tour with Motor City Brew Tours and Bad Bear Brewing was the last stop. I remember it being good, but not much beyond that. So now that owner has opened Grand River Marketplace in Jackson, which will be a must-hit on your scenic SW MI beer tour trail (which also includes Dark Horse, Arcadia Ales, even Greenbush and the Livery if you go far enough). Also, Motor City Beer Tours has already said they'd be adding it to one of their routes - an experience I highly recommend. (I think. From what I remember.) [MLive]

~German Park celebrated its 75th anniversary last weekend. You'll have two more chances to celebrate along with them later this summer. [AnnArbor.com]

~World of Beer opened. I remain unconvinced. [AnnArbor.com]

Greater Michigan
~DAMNIT STOP TELLING EVERYONE. Yes, Traverse City is one of America's 10 best small towns. [Livability]

~Yeah, Marquette is totally awesome and also way more cosmopolitan than you might think. Actually it's kind of like a teeny tiny Madison, though less artsy and more outdoorsy. [Wasau Daily Herald]

Random
~First We Feast presents 20 actual print-based local food publications (how novel!) worth reading. Shout-out to Edible Communities, which includes SE MI's edibleWOW Magazine, for which I am a long-time contributor and much longer-time lover. Really terrif mag, as is Edible Grande Traverse Magazine next time you're in TC. Print isn't dead. In fact, because of the ever-increasing white noise of the Internet, print mags, with all of their timing restrictions, have actually become better than ever. There's a certain kind of freedom that comes with having to distinguish yourself from the swamp; these are great examples of that. [FWF]

~Sadly, Detroit is not yet an option for Yelp's Word Map. But how handy it will be once it is! [Gizmodo]

~Children, I cannot explain this to you enough: you don't know when it is going to happen until it goes and happens, and then it is TOO LATE and there is NO TURNING BACK. Aging is the greatest indignity of life. Try to do it gracefully. Or, at least, strategically. [Jezebel]

~Behold, the most America-est hot dog in America. [Thrillist]

~Here is a list of 100 ranked BBQ sauces from all over the world, but mostly 'Murca. [BBQ Superstars]

[Real Detroit] You Don't Know Shit from Shinola

The antiquated idiom "You don't know shit from Shinola" originated during WWII and referred to the American-made Shinola brand shoe polish (the implication being that a person is too stupid to know the difference between shoe polish and feces).

The original Shinola shoe polish is no longer made, but that doesn't mean the brand is dead. In 2012 the brand was resuscitated under new ownership. Tom Kartsotis, the formerly retired founder of Fossil (you know, that other watchmaker), established Shinola with the intention of bringing quality hand-crafted watch manufacturing back to America, and based it in Detroit – the heart of American manufacturing.

The Week We Ate (The EID Week in Review)

Not the same thing.
Thank you, once again, for the overwhelming outpouring of unsolicited support via personal emails, Facebook posts and messages, and texts. This fall I plan on being a Nine Inch Nails groupie and follow them around on the festival circuit while also pursuing my dream of not being home for pretty much all of July through October. Which I think is explanation enough, but if not, this once again. [EID]

So I posted this:

OFFS. Another terrible national "breastaurant" chain is franchising throughout metro Detroit. Victor Ansara, who owns 22 Red Robin locations in MI and OH as well as two 2Booli locations and Portofino in Wyandotte, and his 4 sons (2 of which founded Burgerz, now working on their third location) have set up "Motor City Peaks LLC" and will operate 6 new Twin Peaks location. The first one could be open as early as next summer.

The press release also contained this gem: “Michigan is new territory for Twin Peaks and there’s a huge demand for this kind of concept in the Detroit area,” said Ansara. “We have a huge number of loyal sports fans here and they want a fresh, new restaurant experience and that means more televisions, great food and a fun atmosphere – that’s exactly what Twin Peaks provides.”

Well, nothing says "fresh" and "new" like a sports bar drowning in the glare of its own flatscreens tended by co-eds in micro-shorts!

Also, fuck you for ruining Twin Peaks for me. Fuck you so hard.

And this is what happened from there.

No legal booze was bad news for Cheesecake Bistro, turns out. [Crain's]

In case you missed it:
~Craft cocktails have gone from a niche corner of the bar market to the new expectation for all discerning drinkers and drunks. Roast, The Oakland, and The Sugar House led the way, but now the local artisan distilling industry has made huge gains and a new crop of craft cocktail bars is rising up including Red Crown, The Sardine Room, Pizzeria Biga - Royal Oak, The Last Word and more. What a difference two years make, eh? [EID]

~The Crowne Plaza Detroit Downtown-Convention Center opens next month, and with it The Jefferson House and Urban Cellars. Here is the very first look inside at the space and some of the menu items. Will this be the new Detroit hot spot? With a 40-seat outdoor patio (not pictured) and plans to reopen the Top of the Pontch, it most certainly could be. [EID]

~The Downtown Detroit Farmer's Market is held every Thursday from 11am-6pm in Lafayette Greens with vendors like Brother Nature Produce, Brooklyn Street Local, Detroit Bulk Company, and more. [Model D]

~Kitchen Connect, a partnership between FoodLab Detroit and Eastern Market Corporation, will soon start accepting applications for their community kitchen/business incubator partners in Osborn and SW Detroit. [Model D]

~Bike rides and barbecues and boats, blah blah blah. Here are 10 things to do this summer that aren't the same-old parks + rec round-up. (Complete with both Shakespeare and HST references.) [Metromode]

~A very sincere thank you to everyone at The Detroit Bus Company, Traffic Jam + Snug, St. Cece's Pub, El Taco Veloz, and Corridor Sausage Co. for a fantastic inaugural Eat It Detroit/DBC tour and a great Saturday afternoon, and thanks to everyone who came out! [EID FB]

The wonderful James sisters now have a permanent Detroit storefront presence with their DROUGHT juice inside the new Shinola store in Midtown, which just opened to the public on Friday. Here is an interview with co-owner Julie James. [Shinola]

The Markets of Cadillac Square started Friday, which now means we have Campus Martius Park Beach, the weekday food vendors in Campus Martius, the Downtown Farmer's Market Detroit on Thursdays and now this. Downtown Detroit is turning into a sour Skittle-colored bazaar! [Crain's]

Rodin is now open for lunch. [Rodin]

A new late-night menu starts at Imperial on July 5. Which now effectively eliminates my need for the recently-reopened Taco Bell on Woodward just north of 8 Mile. [Imperial]

Great Lakes Midtown just turned one years old. [GLC FB]

Mike Illitch continues making the dough. [MLive]

The Foodtruck Cafe is now open, for those who want all the fun of food trucks without having to deal with the the pesky impracticalities of mobile dining. Also known as a "restaurant." [Royal Oak Patch]

Looks like Bistro Joe's, located above Papa Joe's Gourmet Market in Birmingham, is also now open. Based on this lone Yelp review, it at least sounds promising. [Yelp]

Here is another story about MSU's Artisan Distilling Program with a nod to Detroit City Distillery. [Lansing State Journal]

The Sugar House got a fancy new sign. (Yes, this is news.) [EID FB]

Marcus Market in Midtown (next to the Bronx Bar) also got a fancy new sign, and this is really news because the Marcus Market is definitely not known for being fancy. Which is a nice way of saying it is known for bums hanging out in the parking lot. One EID reader implied that this is part of "the Shinola Effect." Which is sort of like the Whole Foods Effect, but more focused on aesthetics. [EID FB]

Here is an excellent story about Jim Geary and Woodbridge Pub, also known to some as a home away from home, or "third place." [Model D / Metromode]

If you missed German Park this weekend, you have two more chances to make it this summer: July 27 and August 31. [AnnArbor.com]

World's largest urban farm, Hantz Woodlands, is shaping up on the east side. [MLive]

The Fourth of July is upon us (and the Detroit fireworks have, blessedly, come and gone). Here is a guide to MOAR mortar in metro Detroit. [Daily Tribune]

Etc.
Should tipping be outlawed? As a Detroit resident, I'm not entirely convinced of the "no tips means servers won't do their jobs" counter-argument (first in the comments). Because. Um. Have you been to a lot of Detroit bars and restaurants? I rest my case. [Esquire]

I don't know what I'm more surprised about: the lengthy defense of the website people most love to hate (Yelp), or the fact that Buzzfeed ran something that wasn't a list with animated GIFs. [Buzzfeed]

Beerie
~Another day in Detroit, another pop-up biergarten. [AIA Detroit]

~I very much look forward to spending at least part of the fall in the U.P. again this year. And now someone even made a handy guidebook for me! All of the breweries + The Fitz = DONE. (Though, sadly, Upper Hand Brewery won't open until 2014. Darn it all, guess I'll have to go back again next year.) [UP Second Wave]

~Traverse City Ale Trail? Why, don't mind if I do! (Though I'd also like to see beer bars like 7 Monks Taproom and Brew Traverse City on there, as they also significantly help promote the local beer culture.) And check out the list of "soon-to-be-opened establishments:" TC will be nearly doubling its number of breweries with these! Brewery Terra Firma, Beggars Brewery, The Workshop Brewing Company, Bravo Zulu Brewing and Rare Bird Brewery and Taproom. [The Ticker]
