[HOT LIST] Detroit delivery

This post authored by EID Co-Conspirator Stefanie Cobb.

The Detroiter: knockwurst with coney sauce, grilled onions and cheddar on a sesame bun. Bucharest Grill.

From time to time, we have one of those days where we find ourselves pants-less in bed and starving without an ounce to motivation to move, much less to put on pants to leave and get food. Or maybe it’s one of those nights where you’re a six-pack-plus-some deep, and all there is to eat in your apartment is a half-empty box of linguine and ketchup packets. Seeing as how it’s generally frowned upon to venture out drunk and pants-less, how will you fulfill that basic human need for pizza nutrition? Delivery, of course, and here are some places that will bring food right to you. Sadly, you're still going to have to put on pants to answer the door. (But only for like, five seconds. Then RIGHT back off again.)

PIZZA:
Because who isn’t in the mood for pizza?

The ghost pepper pizza at Amar Pizza.
Amar Pizza (313) 366-0980

Pizza, halal, sandwiches, salads, and other fried goodies. All awesome. They’re located in Hamtown at Caniff and Conant St. They deliver within a two and a half mile radius. And yes, they're famous for their ghost pepper pizza, which is not -- and we cannot emphasize this enough, ***NOT*** -- what you want to order when you're actually hungry and actually want to eat something, and YES it's just as hot on its way back out. Show off some other time. "Oh it's not that hot." Fuck you.

Bangkok Cuisine Express II (313) 832-3408
Monday-Friday 9am-9pm, Saturday 12pm-9pm, Sunday 12pm-6pm
The Drunken Noodles are pretty solid and they’re conveniently located to accommodate all Midtowners.

Monday-Thursday (and Sunday) 11am-11pm, Friday-Saturday 11am-2am
Hello Chicken Shawarma with curly fries, allow me to devour that fuck out of you so you’re the last thing I see before passing out on my bathroom floor. See you in my dreams. Delicious Romanian-Mediterranean grub delivered until 2am. The End.

Detroit 1 Coney Island (313) 832-7380

Holy falafel! This Middle Eastern hole in the wall delivers to all of Midtown. They have falafels and more falafels, but also breakfast, soups, salads, sandwiches and then some more falafels. Falafel.

CK Mediterranean Grille and Catering

They have a decent spread of Fattoush salad, Shawarma, Kabobs, Hummus, etc. CK delivers within the Downtown radius.

Maccabees at Midtown (313) 831-9311
Monday-Wednesday 8am-10pm, Thursday-Friday 8am-12am, Saturday 9am-12am, Sunday 11am-4pm These newbies inhabit the ground floor of, go figure, the Maccabee building in Midtown. They deliver around that area for orders with a $20 minimum. They’ve had quite a bit of buzz since their recent opening. The menu offers bistro-style American cuisine such as sandwiches, burgers, and breakfast foods.

Hot Spokes

Detroiter Shanye O’Keefe is the founder of Hot Spokes, a bicycle delivery service within the boundaries of Midtown. They will deliver food from Cass Café, Shangri-La, Slows To Go, Goodwells, PJ’s Lager House, Seva, Avalon, and Louisiana Creole Gumbo. If any of those places ignite your craving, simply call any of the restaurants listed, place your order and tell them you’d like delivery through Hot Spokes. They’ll pick up your order and bike it right to your door.

The Week We Ate (The EID Week in Review)

The children of Quickenstan will now be well-caffienated, and there's also robots to hold their attention because you cannot possibly spend the bulk of your waking hours inside of a seizure-inducing Dan Gilbert building without being easily susceptible to stimuli. [Deadline / Curbed Detroit]

Greektown Casino has a new fine dining restaurant, a new food court, and an inexplicable obsession with the letter "z." With Design Disaster Dapper Dan making a bid for a controlling interest in the casino, these changes are probably just a glimmer of what's to come. [Model D]

Maccabee's at Midtown opened quietly but has gained huge buzz fast. Here's a bit more info on the owner and how he came around to opening Midtown's newest hotspot. [Model D]

The Oxford Inn is going to re-brand as a cowboy/country western bar, in answer to that burning question, "Just HOW could Royal Oak get any douchier?" This is how. [RO Patch]

A "refined Spanish, Asian and French" fusion restaurant offering a "chic, luxurious experience you won't find elsewhere in the city" with a "curated" audience that isn't just "cashing in on suburbanites" that also has the same name as a famous Rick Bayless restaurant but is not named after it. I'm just quoting the story here, people. [Det News]

St. Cece's Pub is now serving Saturday brunch. I, for one, am very excited by the prospects of this new Saturday brunch trend I'm seeing emerge. [St. Cece's FB]

Mae's now has new hours which should pair nicely with their new liquor license once they get the blessing from the Most High Exalted MLCC. [Mae's FB]

Whole Foods! Food desert! Urban farming! Artisan food producers! This story has it all! [Bridge MI]

Is it wrong of me that I do not consider this to be a completely outlandish solution? Because we've certainly seen worse recently. [Deadline]

Thing status: achieved. Wheat wines (okay so technically I said barleywines would be the next big thing but I clump wheat wines in the same general category) are officially A Thing, thanks to Imbibe Magazine. (Shout out to New Holland Brewing Co. for their Pilgrim's Dole!) [Imbibe]

[Model D] Maccabees at Midtown opens quietly, gains buzz fast

There aren’t many new restaurants in the Midtown/Corktown/Downtown neighborhoods that open nowadays without a whole lot of fanfare, often months in advance starting from the day the concept is announced. But Maccabees at Midtown, which officially opened on Dec. 30, opened like a phantom; without any major announcements or media coverage it sprang forth into existence and started serving what the locals already seem to agree is some pretty phenomenal food.

The Week We Ate (The EID Week in Review)

Ice Cream Paflor.
Mudgie's is celebrating five years in business with a shiny new liquor license. [Det News]

Maccabee's in Midtown also received their liquor license this week. [Macabee's FB]

The Falling Down Beer Company and Ice Cream Paflor now has a sign. [FDBC FB]

Chef Adam Hightower is no longer with Gastronomy. There is no real word on what happened, where he's headed to next ... or what this means for Gastronomy. [Crain's]

"With credit to Eat It Detroit for breaking the story on Twitter since she was there when it happened and sent out Tweets minutes afterwards" ... is apparently too much to hope for. So Woodbridge Pub got robbed with an air rifle, I was there and saw this guy totally Krav Maga the punk kid trying to hold up the place, that part was awesome and let's not be scared to go to Woodbridge now because they have good beer. [Motor City Muckraker]

Here's a great story on the Two James Spirits Distillery, coming to Corktown this summer. [Crain's]

Detroit gets ready for our close-up. The North American International Auto Show is in town; lots to read about but here and here are specifically about food, hospitality and the stunning new special events space. Also, HOLY SHIT THE NEW CORVETTE OMGOMGOMG. [Crain's / Model D / Autoweek]

New food truck coming to Ferndale this spring: Don Lucho Taco Truck and Salsa, "authentic" Mexican with vegan and vegetarian options. [Prosper/Metromode]

I'd talk about the hot dogs and the cheap food and the local sourcing at the new Deputy Dogs Coney in Clawson, but I kind of got hung up on the last line about 14 Mile Rd. being one of the most-travelled roads in the state of Michigan. I do not want to call you a liar, sir, but I do not think that this is true. [Clawson Patch]

Mike Lodish of Lodish's Champion Brittle went from playing in Superbowls to making peanut brittle. [Metromode]

New in the brunch game: Ye Olde Saloon in Royal Oak. #allhailbrunch [Ye Olde FB]

The Wurst Bar is celebrating their one-year anniversary, and have also added late night food AND beer (AND beer) delivery! Also, Friday nights there are the best. That's not in the article, I'm just telling you. [AnnArbor.com]

Juicy Kitchen, a healthy cafe that also serves prepared foods like sandwiches to go, opens in A2 next week. [AnnArbor.com]

~Is it just me or does it seem like one of these lists come out every three months? Eh. DRAFT Magazine names their 100 top beer bars for 2013; Ashley's Ann Arbor, Clubhouse BFD, HopCat and The Mitten Bar made the cut. [Draft Mag]

Eat It GR

Beer City USA is in the running for being named Newsmaker of the Year by the Grand Rapids Business Journal for the explosion in the craft beer scene over the last year -- from six new breweries opening to the "Thank You, Beer" exhibit at the Grand Rapids Public Museum to, well, being named Beer City USA. [GRBJ]

Chicago is totally crushing on western Michigan's brewery scene, as well they should because their breweries blow. [Chicago Tribune]

Midwest Living also thinks our craft beer scene is totes amaze-bo. [Midwest Living]

Why is this happening in Chicago and not in Michigan where the majority of the cider is produced? You guys, we really need to stop letting Chicago take credit for everything. [Cider Summit Chicago / Vander Mill]

Beware the Curmudgeon. [Founders FB]

Easily one of the most amazing festivals/art events/community happenings you'll ever see. And it's free. And it's right here in GR. And TIME Magazine agrees, naming ArtPrize one of its five top festivals in the world for 2013. [TIME / MLive]

GR Beer Week is getting ready to launch Feb 18-23. [GRBW FB/Twitter/blahg]

The Week We Ate (The EID Week in Review)

This just screams "coincidence."

Mae's in Pleasant Ridge has received approval for their long-in-the-works liquor license. There are no plans to extend their hours into dinner service, but you can bet your sweet bleary-eyed hungover ass that there will be mimosas and Bloody Marys (also a small selection of craft cocktails, wine, and Michigan beer). [Mae's FB / EID FB]

Falling Down Beer Company is officially a brewery in metro Detroit's own little beer city, Warren. [FDBC FB]

And Schramm's Mead is officially a meadery in metro Detroit's newly-annointed City of Mead, Ferndale. Or maybe it should be the City of Milk and Honey? Not sure where the milk part comes in, but it would be a nice nod to Ministry (censored version). [Schramm's FB]

In the never-ending news fodder provided by Flavor Flav's Chicken and Ribs, Flavor is now considering making the Sterling Heights restaurant a shooting location for a black Happy Days. So there's that. [Macomb Daily]

I've been yapping about metro Detroit's craft cocktail scene for a couple of years now (*cough*FIRST*cough*), but this might be the biggest happening on a national scale for Detroit's craft cocktail scene yet: Travis Fourmont of Michael Symon's Roast won Woodford Reserve's Master of the Manhattan in Manhattan, beating out mixologists from the booziest cities in the country ... INCLUDING MANHATTAN. [Woodford Reserve]

The Detroit Animal is observed by the Chicago Tribune. SLOWS BAR BQ, Green Dot Stables, ASTRO COFFEE, The Sugar House, Mercury Burger Bar, Eastern Market Corporation and etc. Thankfully, Detroiters seem to have finally reached a blissful shade of jade over these phoned-in Corktown-centric round-ups. [Chicago Tribune]

We don't really have the brightest criminals around here. (I can attest to this personally.) [HuffPo]

Detroit's most famous restaurant SLOWS BAR BQ is undergoing a much-needed expansion. The new space will be mostly separate from the main dining room, enabling them to accommodate large private parties and also allowing increased bar space for those waiting for a table. 36 added tap handles will mostly duplicate those in the main space, and Chef/Partner Brian Perrone will have a larger updated kitchen that will enable him to run more specials and beer dinners. And here's photos! (And the worst commenters in the world.) [Model D / Curbed Detroit]

Building a bagel culture takes time. So does completely renovating a historic and long-vacant building. But ground has broken on their new production facility and construction will move forward from there, so Detroit Institute of Bagels will soon be a reality in Corktown! And here's one with more puns. [Model D / Detroit News]

American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island appeared together on Food Paradise on the Travel Channel. [Detroit News]

St. Cece's Pub is now serving Sunday brunch. [SCP FB]

The Motown Winter Blast is returning again this year! And oh, hey, Dan Gilbert practically owns this now too. [Freep]

For 2013, the Detroit Bus Company is changing up their services a bit. No more weekend bar service, but new events and plans to work in more of a public transit capacity. And have you checked out their drunk tours yet? (Well. They're not ALL drunk tours. Like the church one, that definitely isn't. Though you know something, some of those church types can DRINK. Like monks? You've had Belgian beer? Super-high ABV and all made by monks. I rest my case. Jesuits too. They like the wine. I know this from my time at UDM.) [DBC Official]

Thrillist takes a first look at the recently-opened Maccabees at Midtown, and it looks pretty delicious indeed. It also looks a whole hell of a lot like the HistoricDetroit.org website. [Thrillist / EID FB]

Here's more on Winezilla - owner Ed Bosse isn't new to the wine retail game (or playing it in Ferndale for that matter), and offers affordable (and dare I say fun?) labels that also include a special bottling from L. Mawby Winery called "Ferndale Fizz." (Which if it's anything like the "Detroit" label will suck, unless you like being muscatoed in the face.) There's also a section of Michigan-made snacks, and a totally Ferndalian mural! [Ferndale 115]

And more word on new restaurants coming to Ferndale in 2013: Ferndale Public House replacing Josephine's, Zeke's R+R BBQ replacing AJ's Music Cafe, Tokyo Sushi + Thai replacing Pete's Place. [Ferndale 115]

Brew Jus, which was located in the Rust Belt Market, is shutting down, though partner Nick Schultz plans on moving forward with his own company in the future with a similar mission. Since opening, Nick's partner David Ballew has been plagued with health issues which often demanded long absences from the business, which undoubtedly played a role (among other factors) in this decision. [The Sauced Chef FB]

You know, between Urban Putt-Putt in Corktown, Drive Table Tennis Social Club, and now the new video game lounge and mobile gaming service for parties Activ8 in Ferndale, what we really need around here is MORE LASER TAG. #legendary [Ferndale Patch]

Coffee and (____) ended their pop-up run in West Village this week, but not without a bang. [C+___ FB]

The head of one of Greektown's major business families, Ted Gatzaros, passed away this week. He and his former partner, other Greektown family head Jim Papas, together created Greektown Casino. The Gatzaros family also own the Atheneum Suite Hotel, Fishbones Rhythm Kitchen Cafe, and others. His son Nico is behind The London Chop House revival.  [Crain's]

The Townsend Hotel/Rugby Grille has a new Executive Chef who is, apparently, super "into" the whole local thing. Here's hoping this means the AAA Four-Diamond-rated restaurant won't rely so much on Sysco. [Ferndale Patch]

Kilwin's in Birmingham has closed, and there's already new businesses interested in the space (as well as the former Zumba Grille space). Two years from now when I get my intense once-a-decade craving to eat a whole box of chocolate-covered pretzels, this is going to make me very sad. [B-ham Patch]

Midwest Living also digs The Root Restaurant + Bar! [Midwest Living]

Ann Arbor and beyond

Rub Pub BBQ has officially opened its third location in Ann Arbor in a spot that some say is "cursed." (Not like in a gypsy-curse-that-restored-Angel's-soul-only-to-take-it-away-again-the-moment-he-experiences-pure-happiness kind of way, but in like a no-business-can-seem-to-stay-open kind of way.) [AnnArbor.com]

New "new American" joint in A2, Vellum Restaurant, now open. [AnnArbor.com]

the (espresso) bar will reopen February 1. With shiny disco balls. [teb FB]

Ann Arbor Restaurant Week runs January 20-25 with a record 52 restaurants participating. [Freep]
